Whats it about!
Bala Govindam (Allu Arjun) is a reporter with MAA Television. He plans to expose gudumba mafia in Dhoolpet. He sees Murugesh (Subbaraju), the son of local mafia leader Tambidorai (Pradeep Rawat), beating up a guy (Raja Ravindra). Balagovindam saves the guy and bashes up Murugesh who falls in a deep coma. Now the Tambidorai gang is on the lookout for Bala. His father (Chandramohan) advises him to runaway from the city for few days. He goes for Manali to cover a story. There he falls in love with a Sanyasini Vaishali (Hansika). He proposes to her. Initially she rejects his advances but later on draws towards him. Giving the juice to the story, the goons land in Manali and take away Vaishali. In a flash back it is revealed that Vaishali is not sanyaisni. Revealing of her past, and hero taking revenge forms rest of the film.
Analysis
Director Puri Jagannadh is known for presenting heroes as aggressive and care-for-damn guys. Likewise, he chooses titlu as titles. After stupendous success of Pokiri, when he is chosen Allu Arjun for Desamuduru, expectations rose. For Allu Arju brings high energy on to the screen that suits the Puris style. But what we get here is quite ordinary film.
With wafer thin story line, Puri tries to hold the viewers interest but doesnt succeed much. Desamuduru starts off decently with lighter romantic episodes in the first half, it goes haywire post the interval. Poor script is the major draw back. No novelty in the second half has changed the entire films result.
In breathtaking locations of Spiti, Manali and the Himalayan range, the film begins pleasantly. The script is too forcible. First half is okay. Had the second half is taut, it would have been different story. Desamuduru drifts into run of the mill mode towards the climax. Alis entire comedy episode (despite some suggestive dialogue and scenes) brings down the house. Frankly speaking, people would remember Alis (he does superbly and Puri Jagannadhs dialogues are fantastic here) comedy than any other thing else at the end of the film.
Performances
Allu Arjun has re-invented himself with building up muscled body much like Bollywood heroes. He looks dashing. He has tried hard to present himself stylishly and succeeds in that front. Allu Arjun should be commended for trying for complete change-over. But his efforts are marred by the weak characterization. However it is newcomer Hansika Motwani who catches the attention. She looks cute and bubbly. She has some serene quality on face that best suits for romantic films. She will go places.
The villains Pradeep Rawat, Telangana Shakuntala, Subbaraju have done neat job.
Technically, Sham K Naidu needs all praises. He shot the film brilliantly. Entire film looks so gloss and bright. Marthand Venkates edits efficiently. But he should have deleted two songs in the second half. Chakris music is okay. Two songs are good. Rest of them sound all similar. One is straight lift (including instrumentation) from Rehamans Dil Se.
Whats hot!
Comedy is highlight. Scenes of hero trying to seduce a Sanyasini are fresh. The locales of Spiti are eye-catching. Hero Allu Arjuns energetic acting style and Hansika Motwanis charm are hot.
Whats not!
Second half is monotonous. There is no soul in the story. The pace is also very slow at most times. If we put aside Alis comedy in the second half, the film looks hollow. The villain gang is shown spineless. Kovai Sarals character is irritating. If she really hates Sanyasi life, why should be there in the Ashram sulking and dreaming of men? Why’s hero called Desamuduru, where does he really done ‘muduru’ acts?
Bottom-line
Critically speaking it is disappointment. Desamuduru would have been good had the second half is different. The first half and comedy are good despite some dj vu scenes. Commercially, it might be an average film. But again, Puris Pokiri didnt receive rave reviews but it turned out to be big hit. Will that magic work again? Lets wait and see.
